چکیده

Estimates of the Effect of Parents’ Schooling on Children’s Schooling Using Censored and Uncensored Samples In this paper we estimate the impact of parental schooling on child schooling, focus on the problem that children who are still in school constitute censored observations, and evaluate three solutions to it: maximum likelihood approach, replacement of observed with expected years of schooling, and elimination of all school-aged children. Plug (2004) – a recent mobility study that relies on censored data – serves as an illustration. With updated and uncensored versions of previous samples, we re-examine Plug’s estimates and test how the three correction methods deal with censored observations. The one that treats parental expectations as if they were realizations seems to fix the censoring problem quite well. JEL Classification: I2, J62, C34

Optimally Combining Censored and Uncensored Datasets

We develop a simple semiparametric framework for combining censored and uncensored samples so that the resulting estimators are consistent, asymptotically normal, and use all information optimally. No nonparametric smoothing is required to implement our estimators. To illustrate our results in an empirical setting, we show how to estimate the effect of changes in compulsory schooling laws on ag...

Market Returns, Transfers and Demand for Schooling in Malaysia, 1976–89

If parents expect higher market returns to schooling or additional transfers from their children, they invest more in their children’s schooling. Results from models of schooling demand using data from the Malaysian Family Life Surveys of 1976 and 1989 suggest that market returns of mothers but not fathers positively affected schooling. The propensity for parents to spend time with their parent...

Estimating the effect of mother’s schooling on children’s schooling using a sample of adoptees

In a recent paper Behrman and Rosenzweig (2002) present empirical evidence that contradicts the conventional wisdom that maternal schooling has a bigger effect on the child’s schooling than that of her husband. They consider the impact of parental schooling on child schooling in the presence of unmeasured ability and assortative mating. Using twin data, they come to the surprising conclusion th...

Bayesian Estimation of Reliability of the Electronic Components Using Censored Data from Weibull Distribution: Different Prior Distributions

The Weibull distribution has been widely used in survival and engineering reliability analysis. In life testing experiments is fairly common practice to terminate the experiment before all the items have failed, that means the data are censored. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to estimate the reliability function of the Weibull distribution with uncensored and censored data by using B...

The Intergenerational Transmission of Schooling – Are Mothers Really Less Important than Fathers?

There is a “puzzle” in the literature on the intergenerational transmission of schooling, where twin studies emphasize the importance of fathers’ schooling, whereas IV-studies often emphasize the importance of mothers. We provide new evidence on this “puzzle” using register based Swedish data on the largest sample of twins used so far in the literature. In contrast to previous twin studies, our...
